What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage is a massage technique distinctly different from traditional massage (or Swedish massage) due to its use in treating muscle pain and stiffness. It is well suited for treating chronic pain, sports injuries, strains and conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
Deep tissue massage involves sustained pressure being applied using slow movements which target the inner (or deep) layers of your muscles and connective tissue. This process reduces the tension in muscles and tissue and helps to break up scar tissue that forms after an injury. It has also been shown to encourage faster healing by increasing blood flow to the massaged area and reducing inflammation.
Deep tissue massage can help with:
- Chronic low back pain
- Tennis elbow
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Sports injuries
- Fibromyalgia
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sciatica
- High blood pressure
What does it involve?
Firstly your massage therapist will ask you about any areas of pain or problem areas. Your deep tissue massage can be focused on just one area, a couple of areas or your entire body.
Once you’ve discussed your needs with your therapist, you’ll lie on your back or stomach underneath a sheet. The areas of your body that are being worked on will need to be unclothed underneath the sheet.
The massage therapist will begin by warming up your muscles using a gentle touch before progressing to working on your problem areas with increased pressure. Your therapist will use a combination of techniques including deep kneading and slow strokes with varying amounts of pressure.
It is common to feel some discomfort when existing areas of pain are being worked on. Your therapist will talk to you about how much pressure you are comfortable with so that you can benefit from the best possible experience.
Is deep tissue massage right for you?
If you are looking for help with an injury or chronic pain then deep tissue massage could be the right treatment for you.
It is not suited to you if you are pregnant or suffer from osteoporosis. In addition it is recommended that you speak to your doctor before having a deep tissue massage if you have a bleeding disorder, a clotting disorder or are undergoing cancer treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
If deep tissue massage is not right for you, you may benefit from a traditional massage instead. The differences between the two are explained on the Medical News Today website.
What our patients say...
Gemma is brilliant! Very knowledgeable, advises on strengthening exercises and really feel much better after my appointment. See her regularly for a historic neck/shoulder problem and would definitely recommend her.
Samantha
Having just started to try and get fit - this resulted in some injuries to calves, to hip-flexes, and not insignificant discomfort. Gemma was excellent in identifying the issues, and treating the problems. A friendly, personal touch combined with excellent treatment.
